Photographing newborns can sometimes be challenging, especially when the little ones aren't quite in the mood. Recently, however, I discovered a new hack that works wonders during sessions. This tip can be a game-changer for photographers who struggle with restless babies.
My latest addition to the studio is a baby rocker. This handy device was originally designed to be attached to a stroller or Maxi-Cosi car seat and gently rocks the baby to sleep with vibrations and swings. I have discovered that this baby rocker also works great during newborn photo sessions, although there are some limitations.
The baby rocker cannot be used everywhere, because it has to be attached to something and some props are too sturdy to stand on the floor. But with the right setup, the effect is stunning. So far, I have used it successfully with the dreamcatcher, the stroller, and the posing table.
When using the dreamcatcher during the session, I make sure it is placed on a chair and not hanging loosely above the ground, as I also explain in my blog about safety.
By attaching the baby rocker to the dreamcatcher, it gently rocks back and forth. The result? A wonderfully calm baby. Watch the video below to see how effective this is!
On the posing table, I attached the baby rocker underneath the table, as close as possible to where the baby is lying. The subtle vibrations quickly calm the baby, as you can see in the attached video. This makes posing much easier and the photos even more beautiful.
During a recent session, I attached the baby rocker to the rear wheel of a small wicker stroller. The device was out of camera view, but the baby was already so calm that I didn't even need to turn it on.
The end result was beautiful, without me having to use the baby rocker.
